I am part of the Stonewall district. I read in the minutes from the last meeting that Graber and other board members are looking to reduce funding for our public in what can only be described as retaliation to a school board decision to uphold the masking policy for the remainder of the year. Their decision is in line with Virginia law and the current executive order issued by our new governor has not yet taken affect as its legality has been called into questions. While I personally do not have a strong position on the mask mandate at this time, it is incredibly disheartening to hear these threats as an attempt to control school board decisions. I am a parent with one child in the school system and another ready to start next year. Not only would reducing funding to our schools be a detriment to my children, it will also be a detriment to our community as a whole as it would remove jobs for those employed in our school system, impact property values, and prevent many disadvantaged children from getting access to the resources that public schools provide. Our children and their teachers deserve better than having funding cut in such a retaliatory matter. I would urge all board members to consider the consequences of their actions and the power of their words before they take such action or make such threat again.
