11.A) Amendment to the 2024-2025 Fiscal Year Budget - Pursuant to Section 15.2-2507 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as Amended, the Board of Supervisors will Hold a Public Hearing to Amend the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Budget to Reflect:
A Supplemental Appropriation to the School Construction Fund for $151,600,000.00 for a Fourth High School.
A Supplemental Appropriation to the School Construction Fund for $22,400,000.00 for Middletown Elementary School Expansion.
A Supplemental Appropriation to the School Construction Fund for $13,600,000.00 for Jordan Springs Elementary School Expansion, Including a General Fund Supplemental Appropriation in the Amount of $7,463,418.70 for School Proffers.
It's time to stop stonewalling and make a decision about these important projects. The delays because of the fake hand wringing over taxes and other shiny object excuses are well beyond their useful life. The vocal minority who really want to dismantle public education rather than build it up should not outweigh the practical and overwhelming needs before this County. All of the Supervisors may not have had a voice in the rampant development that is leading to the need for improved infrastructure and expanded services but this current Board does have the responsibility to address it. Allowing our schools to operate over capacity is irresponsible and, I would submit, a dereliction of duty (dereliction of duty is when someone fails to fulfill their responsibilities or obligations, especially in a job or official position).
This is a common sense decision and shouldn't have been kicked down the road for this long. We need a 4th high school. Vote to fund it and to fund the improvements needed for the 2 elementary schools like you know you should.
