My name is Christiana Marr, a resident of Shawneeland and Back Creek District. As Spring approaches, I would like to request the board reevaluate the ordinance amendment voted in 2022 to allow residents zoned residential the right to have backyard chickens/ducks. I would love to have a public hearing and speak about the positives of this amendment as well as present solutions to the cons associated with backyard poultry. Additionally, I would like to present research that debunks myths some residents may believe regarding poultry which would prohibit their neighbors from this right.
Some highlights include:
- A maximum of 6 chickens and or ducks in a flock
- A minimum of 0.34 acres of residential land
- Flocks must not contain roosters (for noise concerns)
- Chicken coops must be situated at least 10 feet away property lines.
- Chicken runs/yards must be fenced in.
Additionally, if there are still hesitations about this amendment, I would like to discuss finding a middle ground that both sides would be agreeable to instead of voting the entire amendment down.
Please let me know how I can go about getting this issue revisited as I feel very passionately about this issue and would love to have a small flock for this spring season.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Christiana Marr
