As another season begins, Frederick County once again fails its young athletes. FCALL's season kicks off this Saturday, yet we still don’t have a game schedule—why? Because Frederick County Parks and Rec is dragging its feet on assigning fields. Meanwhile, our kids are forced to play on some of the worst surfaces in the state. Take Stonewall Park, for example—the batter’s boxes are so deteriorated that my six-year-old son practically has to stand on home plate just to take a swing.

This is an embarrassment to our entire community. While other towns—Luray, Harrisonburg, Broadway—invest in quality fields for their youth, Frederick County can’t even maintain the basics. And these aren’t affluent Northern Virginia suburbs we’re comparing ourselves to; they’re small towns that simply prioritize their kids. Meanwhile, we’re in one of the fastest-growing areas in Virginia, yet our fields look like something out of The Sandlot—only worse.

Frederick County Parks and Rec needs a complete overhaul, starting with leadership that actually cares. Our kids deserve better, and it's time we demand it. I urge every member of this community to step up and push for the changes our young athletes so badly need.
