    Comments on Board Agenda Item:
13.A) Request from the Planning Commission to Direct Staff to Compile and Provide Additional Information Regarding the Impact of Data Centers Locating in Frederick County

    To: Board of Supervisors

I oppose the building of data centers in Frederick County. Apart from the many details others are much more able to express, such as water use, power, and noise, I am more concerned that such centers will destroy the essential rural character of our community.
The proposed Meadowbrook Data Center would surround my property on three sides—hardly what I had expected—and relied upon—when I moved here in 2012. Rather, I was drawn to the pastoral landscapes of crops, grazing, and forest which currently surrounds my home. I hardly want a dozen or more multi-story buildings literally blocking my views of the beautiful properties that currently surround my home.
If the Board is determined to move forward, however, I have another concern about the proposed memorandum included in the agenda, which states, “Economic Development Authority (EDA) staff will organize and conduct a community information initiative on data centers to provide a more informal opportunity for residents to learn about this targeted industry of the EDA.” This strikes me as one-sided. The Board would be much better served by a “listening initiative” than an “information initiative” simply to “sell” its own conclusions. From research provided by others interested in this topic, I have many concerns about the effect of data centers, and the Board should create as many opportunities as possible for concerned residents to educate the EDA and fellow citizens—not the other way around.
    Respectfully,
    Paul Britner
